Rick's Rap - January 2008
Bob sent me an email with his comments on the previous masterings, and I gave him a phone call and chatted about them. It's kind of difficult to find a concensus, because neither one of us has an adequate vocabulary to clearly describe what we're hearing, and we use different words to describe what I suspect are identical, or at least similar, things.
I made some mod's to each of the prevous eq's, and moved them in the direction I think we're both after. I came of with 6 different eq's that all pretty much wind up in the same place, but they're coming from different directions and they don't sound identical. I made two cds with 3 eq's on each one. Rather than make an 80 mile round trip to Bob's to deliver them, I was just going to mail them to him (if he would buy a usb cdR drive I could have just emailed them and he could have burned them himself), but as luck would have it he was going to be in my neighborhood for his job, and we made arrangements for him to stop by and pick them up.
Yesterday afternoon he stopped by and we listened to a few select tracks. Our initial feeling is that at least one of the eq's is going to be good enough for us to proceed onward with recording. I kind of hope we're not settling for something we're not going to happy with in the long run, just because we're sick of dealing with it.
Well, after a whole bunch of experimentation we may have finally gotten the guitar eq problems resolved. The guitars on Promised Land seem to be about as good as anything we've ever done. If we don't get blind sided by anything, we should be in a position to forge ahead.
We've also worked out the details of transferring the masters from me to Bob electronically, which should considerably ease up the logistics considerably. Consider me cautiously optimistic.
So far so good. Did a gig with Special Blend last Friday where I supplied the p.a. Jim suggested a mod to my graphic eq that worked out really well. The electronic tunes transfer with Bob is working out well, and we're moving ahead and tweaking the system as we go along.
