Rick's Rap - August 2010
The Freestate Houserockers played the Bowie Old Town Grill last night.
This place has a great house p.a., but Paul was kind of spoiled by the Bose at Phil's and wanted to use it again. The band room is on the 2nd floor, and there's no elevator. I got there before the rest of the band, and wound up carrying most of the stuff upstairs. I may well be getting too damn old.
When we were setting up the place was absolutely empty, but by the time we started playing it had pretty much filled up, and it stayed full until closing. Turned out to be a great gig.
The Freestate Houserockers played the Blue Beetle Bar in Chapala's Restaurant in Burtonsville last night.
We used the house p.a. this time, the setup was pretty easy. When we started we had a few family and friends in the band room, and the bar was pretty full. By the time we finished the 1st set the bar had pretty much emptied out, and we were just playing to a few friends. To add to the frustration Paul was having some severe tuning problems with his firebird, and the pickup selector switch on my epiphone was getting flakey - it crapped out completely part way into the 2nd set. Good thing we both carry spare guitars.
The damnedest thing happened during the 2nd set, the place filled up with a really partying crowd! They all stuck around and party'd their butts off until closing, and then kept asking for just one more song.
After a slow start, it turned out to be another great gig. Go figure.
